Backdate: Iceland June 2024 Day 4
1/6/24
Sat: We woke up at 8.30am for breakfast 45 minutes later. It was a similar
buffet breakfast here but also quite a number of choices! I Liked the low-fat
lactose-free milk. *Herring smelled rather fishy though.* We sat by the
window and it looked another gloomy morning again.Checked
out at 10am and drove to the nearby Seatours office. We spent about half an
hour in the small shop while waiting for our Viking Sushi Tour at 11am to
start. *The captain drives a Tesla man~* Boarded the boat and saw a restaurant
onboard. Four other Chinese came on the tour too.The
captain explained about the different islands and creatures like Iceland
Guillemot and seagulls as we went near or passed by them, albeit I cannot recall
the names now haha. This was the first island we came to but I forgot the
Icelandic name because it was so hard to pronounce. We
went pretty close to another one and saw many seagulls as well as one puffin
there. The “twin peaks” here were 70m tall if I remembered correctly what the
captain said.As
we moved across the sea, the clouds moved away and the blue sky was very pretty,
but the wind blew so hard and we felt really cold at times and had to keep the
gloves on.
They
came to a point where they threw out the anchor and lowered their net into the
waters. As it was being hoisted up, we saw the net of shellfishes for us, albeit
not everything can be feasted on haha. As they cut open the net and poured out
everything onto the table, we saw hermit crab, some crabs at the corner and sea
snail that could not be eaten raw.
Well, the staff were busy cracking open the shells of the scallops and sea urchins while we were busy eating keke. I enjoyed the firm and yummy scallops and ate quite a few of it. *Their soy sauce tasted a bit like coffee and wasabi.* Oh some sea urchins were sweet!
Saw one sole puffin on one of the island as we turned back. Apparently, they have to flap their wings twice as hard to fly. Due to bad weather during some parts of the trip later, we did not go to Borgarfjörður eystri to see the puffins, and hence, this was about the only place we saw them.
It was a pleasant two-hour cruise. After alighting, we decided to buy fish tacos (2490 ISK, S$24.47) from one of the street vendors, Agnið Streetfood, there for lunch. It was quite good! As I realised I left my pair of pounamu studs in the room, so Potato drove us back to the hotel. Luckily, they have not cleaned the room yet and so I saw them lying on the table.
Drove two and a half hours to Kolugljufur Canyon and got there at 4.15pm. *Hot sun came out on the way~ reminding us it’s summer in Iceland really!* It’s quite scary to be standing on the edge here.
After 15 minutes, we drove to Vatnsdalsholar viewpoint. There was a stairway to the top of the hill, but no sight of shepherd dog as mentioned by some other visitors though. With the dark clouds hovering in the area at 5.40pm, we could not see the peak.
Checked in to Hotel Tindastoll at 6.30pm. It’s a boutique hotel built since 1881! Small room and there’s a rustic feel to it, the ceiling was low but the soundproofing was really bad. We could hear people outside and the floor upstairs was creaking as they walk. *Potato checked out their restaurant at the basement too.*
We walked around Skagafjorour town to look for a place for dinner and decided on Hard Wok Café at 7pm. He tried the local beer (1200 ISK) and it had a nutty dark flavour… not bad. Potato ordered the 12” Bubba Gum pizza (3290 ISK) while I had the sweet and sour deep-fried shrimp (3290 ISK). The portions were damn big but mine was a bit disappointing because the sauce was obviously from the packaged kind and I got a bit tired of the flavours after a while. *He dabao-ed two slices for lunch the next day haha.* Spent an hour there and the total cost was 7780 ISK (S$76.47).
