Backdate: New Zealand Hokitika + Christchurch Dec 2023 Day 8

18/12/23 Mon: Ate the teriyaki sushi rolls we bought for breakfast at 8.30am before we checked-out of Fitzherbert Court Motel. I wanted to shop for Pounamu accessories so we went to the Traditional Jade Co. I bought two pairs of Pounamu earrings (NZD 50)! Apparently, all New Zealand Pounamu is sourced from river boulders in the South Island and it is a very tough semi-precious stone with high cultural and spiritual significance to the Maori.

During our four-hour drive east and southwards towards Christchurch, we had the sour berries smoothie… tasted okay. Got off the admire the view at Otira Viaduct Lookout for a short while. Also just took a quick snapshot at Kura Tawhiti and off we went!

Finally got to Bealey Quarter (S$122.58 for two pax for a night) at 2pm. The weather was both warm and cooling at the same time and we walked about 20 minutes over to New Regent St Precinct, which was the only remaining heritage street in Christchurch built in early 1930s and in Spanish Mission architectural style.

Not many restaurants or cafes were opened so we settled for Café Stir for late lunch close to 3pm. He had the recommended crispy chicken burger (NZD 25) and I had my “meatless Monday meal” by coincidence: egg benny with mushroom (NZD 23.8)! The beetroot hollandaise sauce was good and the mushroom was tender and shiok!

Walked back to our hotel, rested for a bit before we drove out to John Jameson lookout and Sign of the Bellbird Viewpoint at 5pm. *The wind was blowing like crazy man~* So we parked our car and he saw this Kennedys Bush Scenic Reserve Crater Rim Walkway which he somehow thought was only a 860m path and we began walking up…

But soon we realised it felt like we were walking endlessly and I got somewhat nervous and pek cek because there was no one around and we were at the edge of the walkway at times. We both thought we should stop at one point so we took a shot before turning back.

The views were awesome but the sun was awful haha. When we drove over to Bowenvale carpark, we saw some young Japanese and Potato helped them to take photos. Of course, I’d liked some too~

After which, we drove further east to New Brighton Pier, the longest ocean pier in Australasia at 300m. We were facing the sea by then and you can imagine the wind was even worse lol. People were fishing at the edge and there were seagulls waiting to eat fishes haha. Saw some surfers too. *There were messages left on the rails for people who committed suicide jumping off the bridge.*

We didn’t want any more fried food for dinner so Potato found this Japanese place in central Christchurch called Sakimoto which was run by Japanese. He enjoyed his chirashi don (NZD 28) while I had my unagi don (NZD 20) at 8+pm before we got back to Bealey Quarter at 9.15pm.
