Backdate: Mauritius Jun 2023 Day 1

6/6/23 Tues: PotaTOHs and WW’s flight aboard SQ 108 came a day after the devasting news of STC’s closure, so I didn’t sleep well the night before. Early next morning, Potato and I took a Grab ride to T2 and arrived at 7.10am or so ($32) for our flight towards Kuala Lumpur at 9.20am. *Return flight tickets costed us about $1.3k per person.* It was a short one-hour flight but we had to take a bus to transfer to the correct departure gate in KL airport. *Also glad that our luggages were checked through both ways.*

Flew Air Mauritius MK 647 at 12.50pm and it was a long seven-hour flight to Mike’s hometown~ Potato got a huge cup of red wine lol and their snack and main containing eggplant and chicken were not bad haha. Mauritius is four hours behind Singapore, so we touched down at 3.50pm local time. After collecting our luggage, we exchanged money just before exiting the airport. *PotaTOHs changed S$800 each and the rate was at 33.05, so we got rs52,880.*

Saw Sachin for the first time though we spoke via Whatsapp when I was in Singapore. Mike recommended him for our rental car service through his trainer friend Preetam and Sachin’s a nice guy because we got our red Suzuki Dzire rental car for a really good deal at rs9200 for 10 days. *Parking at the airport was rs100.* Fits four of us and our two big, one medium and one small luggage nicely. We drove off at about 5pm and the weather was quite cooling as it’s winter in this East Africa country.

It was a short drive to Preskil Island Resort and we got there at 5.30pm. They served us very sweet sugarcane juice upon sitting down and told us many free activities like kayaking etc that the resort offers but we had no time to do it the next morning even lol. The staff then brought us to our junior suites (two suites costed S$583.11 for one night) on the second floor but in two buildings opposite each other. The interior was as nice as you’d see in the photos online, but the sea wasn’t that “blue” la haha.

Dinner was expensive in the resort as expected, so we drove out to a random eatery called Restaurant Du lac nearby. *On hindsight, it was the worse dining place we’d eat at in Mauritius lol.* WS craved for calamari (rs450) and Potato and I shared Thai chicken rice and egg (rs350)  which looked like fried rice while WWs’ Thai curry green rice (rs550) was not even green in colour lol. WS and I also ordered passionfruit and orange juice (rs250). Other food on the menu was very expensive and there were no other customers in sight except for us.

Worse still, the boss was rather reluctant to return loose change when I paid rs2000 for the bill of rs1650, albeit he did in the end. *Spoke to Mike the next morning and we learned not to just eat anywhere in that area because they are there to “chop” tourists!* Then, we drove to Bo’valon shopping mall nearby and walked in the small shopping centre for a bit. Potato also bought the box of six Macdonald nuggets (rs109) for supper and the pricings were about the same as Singapore’s in general. Headed back at 8.30pm to rest for the night.
