PH comes over for housewarming +《마우스》+ PotaTOHs' cooking journey…

19/5/21 Weds:  I was tasked to cook a pot of cabbage and dumplings soup, in which I added in enoki, eggs and tofu. There was another portion of cabbage left, and so we thought to stir-fry it with the crabsticks. Turned out there was too much cabbage overall… I almost couldn’t finish my rice. *A reminder to myself to not rush to use up food in the fridge and to cut them into smaller or more suitable portions for different methods of cooking in future.*

20/5/21 Thurs: Potato marinated the cod fish with a dash of black pepper, truffle salt and olive oil~ shiok! He also made miso soup and shanghai greens to go along with the short grain rice woohoo~

21/5/21 Fri: *Heavy rain and damn the wind was so strong that my umbrella bent!* I got the whole kitchen to myself for 45 minutes as I prepared two dishes for dinner tonight. Stir-fried sweet peas with baby corns and chilli padi, which we both thought the corns could be cooked for a little bit longer. Also marinated chopped chicken legs with teriyaki sauce and paprika and it came out aright, though the taste of paprika was not obvious.

22/5/21 Sat: My super hubby cooked lunch and dinner for us both on Kranji Mile day! It’s a simple spinach with carrots and eggs with minced pork in the afternoon, but he surprised me with western for dinner! It was “much more up to his standard” this time he felt, but it’s already delicious to me! He added black pepper to the mashed potatoes and eggs besides mayonnaise, and cooked up his own teriyaki sauce using mirin, soy sauce and sugar as he added in mushroom and onions, and after that the chicken legs to cook and reduce. *很好吃,很幸福哈哈!*

23/5/21 Sun: PotaTOHs went to Hock Hwa at Gombak Central to look for some of our wedding customary items. We decided to have watercress soup with wolfberries and bee hoon for dinner, in which he also stir-fried the pork belly we bought at Giant with gochujang… good pairing I would say! *Hesitated when buying fish at wet market so we did not get any in the end… 下次得果断一点!*

24/5/21 Mon: We saw the recipe for Butter Clams Maze Gohan on youtube, so he decided to cook that dish for dinner. Had to dice the carrots, onions, garlic and mushrooms and cook them in butter. Clams and sake were added after that~ (forgot some salt mirin and soy sauce) Another slab of butter was mixed with the cooked sushi rice, before we poured in the rest of the mixture that was left to reduce on the frying pan. *Potato insisted on having spinach too!* It was rather buttery for me, one plate is filling and still not bad. Potato liked it though.

26/5/21 Weds: Had the 39-weeks pregnant PH over for lunch on Vesak day. *She drove here somemore!* We cooked simple black fungus with broccoli, ABC soup and CP black pepper chicken dishes. She bought some tarts from Wunderfolks over and we reckon the matcha, berries and dark choco ones were nice, but the lemon meringue was way too sour imo haha.

27/5/21 Thurs: Potato grilled snakehead meat with miso sauce… taste was not bad but the meat was probably a little bit thick, so he thought to get a thinner slice of fish meat next time.

28/5/21 Fri: I requested for soba for dinner, then Potato paired it with baked CP fried chicken bites and stir-fried marinated (with olive oil and paprika) potato slices, mushrooms, shimeiji shrooms, cherry tomatoes and onions… satisfied meal!

29/5/21 Sat: Yummy seafood tomato pasta for dinner tonight! Potato showed me how he cleaned the squid, and then added in prawns, baby scallops and cherry tomatoes as the base. He also used the butterhead lettuce and cucumbers to make a salad for us too. *We played a free cooperative short virtual escape puzzle game “Alone Together” by Enchambered… managed to “escape” in about half an hour hehe.*

30/5/21 Sun: Made myself a cup of strawberry and blueberry blend using the Nutriblizter Ahna and Jess bought us~ the blades sure are powerful!

It’s my turn to cook dinner tonight, and so I decided to follow an online recipe to make teriyaki chicken “bento”! Added in xiao bai cai and scrambled egg bits to it. Taste was not bad, but I wonder how come my chicken skin wasn’t as charred as what looked like in the video, so it ended up looking more like soy-sauced chicken instead lol. *A pat on the shoulder for myself!*

31/5/21 Mon: Quick dinner tonight. Potato stir-fried lady’s fingers with whitebait and shimeiji white shrooms, and then baked and microwaved the Korean fried dumplings and leftover CP fried chicken pieces.

2/6/21 Weds: We made our own teriyaki pork burger! Had to mix eggs, salt, black pepper, diced onions and 280g of minced pork meat to make 4 patties, and then sugar, mirin, light soy sauce, sake, water and starch to make the teriyaki sauce. Added boiled eggs and butter lettuce as sides. It was not bad! *Potato said the sauce reminded him of Mos Burger’s teriyaki chicken burger haha!*

3/6/21 Thurs: We bought three sutchi (swai) fish fillet for about $7, and Potato cooked one in butter lemon sauce… yummy! He also tried cooking winter melon with pork rib, red date, wolfberry, carrot and onion without adding chicken stock to it... the taste was not bad!

4/6/21 Fri: Had the leftover soup from yesterday for lunch, and we cooked udon, lady’s fingers and baby corn in tom yam sauce to go with it~ pretty good match!

PotaTOHs played “Unlock: Mythic Adventures: Around the World in 80 minutes”. We had to used a few hints, but the game itself was quite intriguing.

As I was craving for sashimi, we decided to order via Grabfood salmon don and salmon hotate don from MenDonTei from West Mall for dinner. Nothing special but my craving was satisfied nonethless haha.

PotaTOHs started to piece the 1500 pieces of HEYE Oesterle library puzzle I bought from taobao. Two hours into the work and my lower back is sore from prolonged sitting on the floor.

5/6/21 Sat: Potato randomly decided to have army stew for dinner tonight haha! We used some leftover ingredients from the fridge like the spring onions, carrots, enoki, crabsticks, tofu, gochujang sauce and eggs, and he bought king oyster mushroom, kimchi, maggie noodles and boneless chicken leg meat to complete the "feast"! *Only about $10 for two to eat army stew at home leh.*
Was curious about the topic on psychopathic genes in마우스(Mouse), another drama starring이승기.

Apparently, the scriptwriter was inspired by a murder case that happened fours year ago. The murderer was not the least remorseful of her actions, and that she was born with a different gene from normal human being. 마우스was written “as the scriptwriter wanted to see psychopath murderers feel the pain, reflect on their actions, and atone. Even if there’s only a slight chance that they will feel empathy, they should understand their sins sincerely and feel remorse. That would be the best punishment and salvation for the psychopathic murderers.”

I quote the synopsis from Wiki: Mouse fantasizes the scenario, what if psychopaths can feel remorse and guilt for their actions? It follows Jeong Ba-reum (이승기), a steadfast police officer, whose life changes when he encounters a psychopathic serial killer. This drives him and his partner Go Moo-chi (이희준) to unearth the truth behind psychopathic behaviours. This also raises the questions, whether it is possible to scan a psychopath in the mother's womb using fetal genetic testing? And if the child in the womb is a psychopath, will it be wise to have that child?

I knew something was off right from the start with Jeong Ba-reum, but I could not quite point my finger to it. Sung Yo-han (권시현) looked a lot like the psychopath murderer in all ways, but midway through the show, there came a twist. A change of fate that soon revealed everything… rather brilliant.

Most of us would feel for Jeong Ba-reum in the end. After all, he did not choose to have the gene. He blames god for that, but I reckon what he went through was supposedly his “punishment” and “learning” that he had to go through to know what’s it like to be filled with emotions.

As to the ethical question of whether to pass a bill to kill off fetuses with psychopathic gene in the drama, that’s really hard.
